Location: St. Margaret’s Bay, Portland

The first time I passed the major bridge in St. Margaret’s Bay, I glanced at the shore and saw several rafts. Subsequently, I journeyed to a spot called Rafter’s Rest, it’s a big yard with lovely grass and a tree with a swing. For some reason, I thought this was the starting point of the raft, but quickly found out this was not so.

This is the spot where you pay your fee, park your vehicle and take one of the designated taxis up to Berrydale, which might be a 30 to 40 minutes drive away. This adds to the experience, as the last 20 minutes of the journey takes you through some scenic communities.

Once you are at the starting point, the captain gets you seated, while giving instructions and life vests.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive, where charismatic locals point out hidden gems and tales of the past. Choose your pace – a leisurely morning drift or an afternoon serenade by the setting sun. Along the way, tailor your experience with picnic stops at charming riverside havens like Melinda’s on the River, where fresh flavors and island vibes await.

Dive into the rhythm of the river

Your skilled and licensed captain will navigate the gentle currents, regaling you with local lore and fascinating tidbits about the flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for playful children, women washing clothes on the banks, and perhaps even a glimpse of a skilled fisherman spearing his dinner.

Unwind on your bamboo throne, a haven of comfort woven from nature’s bounty. Soak in the panoramic vistas – lush emerald hills draped in mist, sun-kissed cliffs reflecting in the water, and the vibrant tapestry of everyday life along the riverbank.

Romance blossoms in “Lover’s Lane,” a secluded stretch where whispers and stolen glances can paint memories etched in time. As you drift deeper into the rainforest’s embrace, let the rhythmic sway of the bamboo lull you into a state of pure serenity.

Your three-hours excursion culminates at Rafters Rest. This isn’t just a rafting trip; it’s a cultural immersion, a chance to connect with the soul of Portland and its people. To fully enjoy this experience you have to keep in mind that it is a full-day activity.

Bonus perks:

  • Stop at local shops and pubs for a taste of island life.
  • Capture breathtaking photos at iconic landmarks.
  • Pause anytime to soak in the scenery and creatememories that last a lifetime.
