Tiara Darnell was born and raised in Mitchellville, Maryland, but she’s been living in Mexico City for the past five years. When she first moved there, she missed the comfort food of her home country. So she decided to open her own restaurant, Blaxicocina, which serves up soul food with a Mexican twist.
The menu at Blaxicocina features dishes like fried chicken, mac and cheese, and collard greens, but with a Mexican flavor. For example, the fried chicken is marinated in adobo sauce, and the mac and cheese is topped with cotija cheese.
Darnell says that she wanted to create a restaurant that would appeal to both Mexicans and foreigners. “I wanted to show people that soul food can be delicious and healthy,” she says. “And I also wanted to share my culture with the people of Mexico City.”

Blaxicocina has been a hit with both locals and tourists alike. The restaurant has been featured in several publications, including The New York Times and The Washington Post. And it’s been praised for its delicious food and its warm and inviting atmosphere.
Darnell is proud to be bringing soul food to Mexico City. She says that she hopes her restaurant will help to bridge the cultural gap between the two countries. “I want people to see that we’re all more alike than we are different,” she says. “And I want them to experience the joy of soul food.”
In addition to the traditional soul food dishes, Blaxicocina also offers a variety of Mexican-inspired dishes, such as mole poblano and enchiladas. Darnell says that she wants to create a menu that reflects the diversity of both cultures.
“I want people to come to Blaxicocina and experience the best of both worlds,” she says. “I want them to taste the flavors of home, but also discover something new.”
Blaxicocina is located in the Roma Norte neighborhood of Mexico City. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and reservations are recommended.
