Portland. Ah, Portland. Even as a seasoned travel blogger, I find myself constantly drawn back to its raw, untamed beauty. My latest quest? To uncover a hidden gem, a true escape. It began, as many good Portland adventures do, with food. Specifically, Miss Cynthia’s at Winnifred Beach. The salt air, the scent of jerk chicken mingling with sea spray, and the easy laughter of locals—it’s a sensory feast.

Quick Facts
Who is it for: Couples seeking a romantic getaway. Those who appreciate unique architecture and stunning natural views.
What it is NOT: A bustling, all-inclusive resort with constant entertainment. A location for people who want to be in the middle of a city.
Tip: Take advantage of the private patios and balconies for sunrise and sunset views.
What stands out: The breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline.
What is it similar to: Luxury eco-lodges that prioritize natural beauty and tranquility.
Over a plate of perfectly seasoned fish, Miss Cynthia leaned in, her eyes twinkling. “Kareem,” she said, “you have to see this villa up the road. The Fan Villa. It’s something else.” And so, my journey began.
A Hidden Haven
The Fan Villa, a secluded Airbnb, is a world apart. As I approached, the walls, draped in verdant creepers, gave it a mystical air. The sound of gravel crunching under my tires was punctuated by a sharp, alert bark—a dog, the villa’s vigilant guardian, announcing my arrival. The entrance itself is a study in tranquility, a green paved way flanked by flourishing grass plants, leading to a perfectly manicured lawn.
A gated veranda, furnished with comfortable seating and a slowly rotating ceiling fan, hinted at cozy evening discussions. The very air felt different here—calm, a world away from the everyday.
Architectural Whispers of the Past
The main building is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. The round, gazebo-like section, supported by elegant columns, spoke of Neoclassical influences. The clean lines of the main structure, the relative lack of excessive ornamentation, reinforced this sense of classical simplicity. Yet, the exterior winding staircase, with its decorative railings, added a touch of Victorian-era grandeur. The building’s architecture is very unique. The solar panels on the roof also show that modern technologies are being used.
The Master Studio: Coastal Panoramas
The heart of The Fan Villa is undoubtedly the Master Studio. Stepping inside, I was met with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Portland coastline, stretching out to the distant silhouette of the Trident Hotel. The interior is a masterclass in relaxed elegance. A king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom, a living room with a daybed, and a fully equipped kitchen—every detail catered to comfort.
The décor is a delightful mix of casual and modern. A round glass dining table, wicker chairs, a striped sofa, and a touch of retro flair from the record collection—it all came together to create a space that felt both stylish and inviting. The white floors and walls amplified the natural light, creating an airy, spacious feel. To stay here, would be to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Portland, with all the comforts of a high end hotel.
The Mango Cottage: Intimate Seclusion
The Fan Villa also offers The Mango Cottage, a charming retreat with its own ensuite bathroom, living room with daybed, kitchen, and private patio. Like the Master Studio, it boasts stunning views of the ocean and the Blue Mountains. This would be perfect for a couple wanting a private getaway.
Beyond the Villa: Exploring Portland’s Charms
Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without exploring its other treasures. Miss Cynthia’s at Winnifred Beach, with its laid-back atmosphere and delicious food, is a must-visit. Frenchman’s Cove, with its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, is another gem. And for those seeking adventure, the lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls offer endless opportunities for exploration.
Tortuga Lounge Bar: Evening Gatherings
Around the back of the villa, the Tortuga Lounge Bar provides a space for guests to gather, share stories, and enjoy refreshing drinks or a delicious meal. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring, as the sounds of the night close in.
The Fan Villa is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience. It’s a place where time slows down, where the beauty of nature takes center stage, and where you can truly escape the stresses of everyday life.
How long does it take to get to The Fan Villa, from these central points:
Kingston (Norman Manley International Airport): Approximately 2 hours and 47 minutes.
Montego Bay (Sangsters International Airport): Approximately 3 hours and 55 minutes.
Ocho Rios: Approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes.
Negril: Approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes.
