Christmas in Jamaica during the 60’s and 70’s – Pure fun and excitement!

Miss Dottie is a 79-year-old lady, who has a vivid memory of what it was like growing up in rural Jamaica, during the Christmas period. As I stepped into her yard, it was evident she was an animal lover, as several cats prowled her property.  One rested lazily on the wall, with no care as to what was happening, even with me passing him, by several inches.

As I made contact with her, I greeted her in good ole Jamaican fashion, ‘mawning Miss Dottie, mannas and respek.’ To which she responded with a thank you and a smile.

I also used the opportunity to give her a Christmas gift package, before we began our conversation. We spoke for about an hour to kareemsquest.com, as she amused me with her recollection. The most memorable one was how they would find the coolest part in the yard, and dig a hole to store ice.
