There is a specific kind of quiet that only exists in Negril when the midday heat settles over the Seven Mile Beach. It is the sound of the Caribbean Sea barely lapping against the shore, interrupted only by the beach entertainers doing their rendition of Bob Marley songs. I recently found myself sitting at the edge of the new infinity pool at Footprints, watching the horizon blur into the water, realising that this was a significant evolution for a property I had walked past for years.

Negril is changing. The “Negril 2.0” movement is a push toward an eco-oasis style of relaxation, and the Foote family—the owners of Footprints for over 40 years—are leading the charge. time,” revealed Hudson.
From 3-Star to Boutique Luxury

Walking into the lobby, the first thing you notice is the height. The elevated ceilings and clean, cool color palette immediately signal a shift from the property’s three-star roots to its new life as a high-end boutique resort. After the challenges of recent years, the family decided to reinvest in their legacy. They closed the property in 2022 for a massive two-year overhaul and officially reopened in July 2025.
The result is 32 rooms that prioritise local identity. Instead of importing generic furniture, they sourced Jamaican craftsmen for much of the doors, beds, and even the intricate bedmats. The walls are adorned with work by Mr. Fisher, a local Westmoreland artist. The family supported him after a hurricane, and now his paintings provide the visual backbone of the rooms. This commitment to locals is a hallmark of authentic Jamaican travel.
Proudly Jamaican-Owned

In a landscape dominated by massive international chains, Footprints remains one of the few properties on the Seven Mile Beach that is 100% Jamaican-owned and operated. The GM shared a detail that stayed with me: the current lobby actually used to be the family’s living room four decades ago. That history creates an intimacy that massive resorts cannot replicate.
The service follows a three-stage philosophy: “Seen, Served, Spoiled.”
- Seen: You are acknowledged the moment you arrive.
- Served: Your needs are met with professional efficiency.
- Spoiled: This is the peak of their standard—remembering a guest’s favorite coffee or their preferred spot on the beach before they even ask.
Negril’s Newest Sunset Ritual
By 5:00 PM, the energy on the property shifts toward the “Skywalk.” This elevated area has already earned the nickname “The Rick’s Cafe of the Seven Mile Beach.” While the actual Rick’s Cafe is famous for its cliff-jumping, the Skywalk offers a more private, immaculate vantage point for the sunset and sunrise.
I watched guests gather on the Skywalk, drinks in hand, as the sky turned shades of gold and deep orange. It’s a versatile space, large enough to host a wedding for up to 150 people, yet cozy enough for the Saturday night fire shows that the hotel organizes.
Tech-Savvy Amenities for Modern Travelers
For those who travel with a laptop, Footprints has solved a common frustration. I was able to pull consistent internet, from the hotel’s Wi-Fi while sitting in a cushioned lounge chair directly on the sand. This level of connectivity reaches right out to the water’s edge, making it an ideal spot for digital nomads or the diaspora visiting home.

The rooms are equally updated. Whether you are in a Standard Room King—outfitted with a mini-fridge, mini-bar, and A/C—or the top-tier Ocean Front King Suite, you’ll find built-in USB-A and USB-C ports. They’ve also prioritised guest privacy by providing “proper” bathrooms with full doors and spacious layouts, moving away from the “open-concept” trend seen in many modern hotels.
Supporting the Local Ecosystem
One of the most admirable aspects of the resort is its relationship with the surrounding community. The beach remains accessible to the public, fostering an inclusive environment. The management also actively promotes local excursions, specifically recommending certified operators like Elvis and his Tiki Boat.
Elvis has been a fixture on the beach for over 30 years, and the resort encourages guests to book him for trips to Booby Cay island, which is one of the top things to do in Negril.
Quick Facts:
- Room Count: 32 luxury boutique rooms.
- Key Room: The Ocean Front King Suite for the best views and finishes.
- Internet: Up to 50 Mbps available directly on the beach.
- History: Over 40 years of operation by the Foote family.
- Design: Negril 2.0 eco-escape with local artisan-made furniture and Mr. Fisher’s artwork.
Footprints is a reminder that you don’t need a thousand rooms to make a significant impact. It is a space where the legacy of a Jamaican family meets the expectations of a modern, luxury-seeking traveler.
