Cool Runnings Adventure at Mahogany Beach

Written by Kareem LaTouche

Kareem is here from Kareem’s Quest, and today we’re setting sail on a Jamaican adventure from the postcard-perfect shores of Mahogany Beach in Ocho Rios!

The minute you step through the gate, security gives you a friendly nod, and a cool breeze carrying the scent of hibiscus wafts over.

A colorful gazebo with a gift shop beckons, perfect for grabbing some souvenirs before settling under one of the many picnic shelters scattered around the lush green grass.

Here, the friendly bar staff keeps your thirst quenched with refreshing cocktails. A shallow river, about three feet deep, flows alongside, a haven for splashing kids and families. And for those who crave the ocean vibes, lounge chairs line the shore, the turquoise waves lapping gently at your toes.

Now, for the real adventure! Today, we’re joining the Cool Runnings catamaran for a trip to the legendary Dunn’s River Falls, booked through Deluxe Destination (shout out to them for the top-notch service!). Remember, food isn’t included, but fret not! Mahogany Beach offers boxed lunches you can grab on arrival, or pack your own snacks.

Embark on an exciting catamaran adventure

The first stop? Snorkeling! This time, I took the plunge (literally!), and even though the current had a bit of a kick, the underwater world was breathtaking. Colorful fish darted around coral reefs, and the feeling of being surrounded by such vibrant life was pure magic. Back on the catamaran, we headed for Dunn’s River. Some brave souls opted to climb the cascading falls, but since I’ve conquered them before (check out my epic guide to climbing Dunns River Falls!), I chilled on the beach this time.

After a glorious hour and a half of soaking up the sun and good vibes, we returned to the catamaran. Delicious appetizers were served alongside a full bar (open bar), and a mix of retro hits and the latest dancehall tunes got everyone moving. The older folks dug the classics, while the younger crew learned some slick new moves from the energetic tour guides at the bow of the ship.

How long does it take to get to Mahogany Beach, from these central points:

Kingston (Norman Manley International Airport): 1 hour and 34 minutes

Montego Bay Sangsters International Airport: 1 hour and 37 minutes

Ocho Rios: 3 minutes

Negril: 3 hours and 4 minutes
