Sleep in the Trees! Great Huts Resort in Jamaica

Written by Kareem LaTouche

The moment I stepped onto the property of Great Huts Resort, I knew I was in for a unique experience. Gone were the sterile walls and predictable layouts of most hotels.

The entire area is canopied by trees such as: Almond, Fig, Palms and Noonie. Here, the receptionist greeted me from a throne of intricately carved wood, surrounded by towering sculptures that whispered tales of Africa. Not too far away from her are two domesticated senior dogs Samantha and Issac.

This area also doubles as a library of sorts with many books on Bob Marley as well as an encyclopaedia. The air itself hummed with life – the rustling of leaves overhead, the rhythmic chatter of birds, and the earthy scent of damp wood.

My Video review of Great Huts

A Room in the Trees

My room, aptly named the Fig Tree House, was a reflection of the resort’s philosophy of embracing nature. The climb up the wooden stairs was a prelude to the “wow” moment that awaited me. Stepping inside, I was met with a breathtaking view of Boston Beach, framed by the layout of the fig tree.

The balcony boasted intricately carved wooden benches, an invitation to slow down and simply be.

Nature’s Lullaby

As the friendly attendant explained the resort’s eco-conscious ways, a sleek black and white cat sauntered past, reminding me that I was just a visitor in this wild paradise. A little tired from the journey, I sat on a wooden bench as the attendant brought a pitcher of water – Great Huts is all about eco-friendliness, so ditch the plastic bottles and bring your reusable container. The room itself was a delightful blend of rustic charm and artistic touches.

Bold African prints adorned the walls, and sections were cleverly separated by neatly cut bamboo. I was also given a homemade mosquito repellant, brewed with coffee and cloves. “Let me know if it works,” she whispered. “Been working on it for a while now.”

As night fell, rain pattered a rhythmic lullaby on the roof, followed by the soothing crash of waves against the shore. I opted for the mosquito net the first night (better safe than sorry!), but the symphony of nature lulled me into a deep sleep. Forgoing the mosquito net the first night, I surrendered to the experience, the natural world serenading me to sleep.

Sunrise Symphony

Waking up to the golden caress of the sunrise, the first rays kissing the easternmost tip of the island, was pure magic. Stepping onto the balcony, the cool sea breeze invigorated me as I took in the panoramic view of the environment.

Downstairs, a giant concrete tub awaited in the shower, with the trees providing a natural curtain (though privacy curtains are there too, if you prefer).

My Fig Tree House even had a bunk bed and a fridge on the ground floor.

Culinary Delights

After a text from the staff about breakfast options (gotta fuel up for exploring!), I headed to the dining area above reception. Another climb, but the relaxation at the top was priceless! Roots reggae filled the air at a gentle volume, setting a peaceful vibe.

A life-sized giraffe statue stood guard, adding to the whimsical atmosphere.

Wooden chairs and tables surrounded a bamboo lounge area, perfect for kicking back and soaking it all in.

Before being served the attendant asked  “did the repellant work?”

To which I responded, “honestly, it just made me want to drink coffee for breakfast.” We both laughed and then the chef came with a tray.

Breakfast was a feast for the senses. The presentation was flawless, and the flavours danced on my tongue, a major nod to the resort’s talented chefs. But there was another culinary option – a visit to the legendary Boston Jerk Center, where vendors like Bumpy serves up their jerk specialties with infectious enthusiasm.

Hidden Gems

Great Huts isn’t just about the rooms and the food. It’s about the hidden nooks that beckon you to explore. One such gem was a secluded relaxation area close to my room, where I basked in the greenery and the mesmerising view of the cliff and the sea below.

After relaxing for close to an hour, one of the attendants came to me and asked, “Are you ok. You know if you want, you can have lunch here as well?”

I replied, “Oh wow, that is nice. Are there any other scenic spots like these on the property?”

To which she replied, “yes.”

Intrigued, I embarked on a mini-tour.

First stop: African Sunrise, a three-story tower ideal for catching the sunrise.

It even has a pool and lounge area for ultimate relaxation.

Next, the boardwalk – a pathway over 100 feet above the sea, adorned with nautical elements like coral. The natural layout reminded me of Rockhouse in Negril, as everything is built around nature. Seating areas dotted the path, perfect for couples to steal a romantic moment.

Our final stop was the Africana House, a structural building with several rooms, a communal space, and a fully functional kitchen. “Not everyone wants to be deep in the forest,” the attendant explained. “This is for those who prefer amenities like AC.” Outside, a majestic Heron bird strutted around the pool, adding to the tranquil atmosphere.

Warm Hospitality

The staff at Great Huts were the invisible thread that tied everything together. Their attentiveness and genuine hospitality made me feel welcome and cared for. It was during these interactions that the true essence of the resort shone through – a place to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with oneself and nature. Sure, Wi-Fi was available, but the pull of the natural world was far too strong to resist.

An Unforgettable Escape

Great Huts isn’t for everyone. There are no TVs in the rooms, and the treehouse setting comes with its fair share of steep stairs. But for those seeking an authentic Jamaican experience, a place to truly immerse themselves in the island’s wild beauty, this resort is a dream come true. It’s a place where art meets nature, where comfort takes a backseat to connection, and where the greatest luxury is the chance to simply be.
