The cool embrace of the Blue Mountains always calls to me, a refreshing counterpoint to Kingston’s heat. My latest quest led me high above the city, a journey that began in the familiar bustle of Papine and snaked through the quietude of Gordon Town. As I ascended into Irish Town, the landscape transformed. Towering pine trees emerged, their scent sharp and clean on the breeze, mingling with the earthy fragrance of wet soil. Lush greenery formed a dense canopy overhead, casting dappled shadows on the winding roads. On both sides, the famous Blue Mountain coffee bushes lined the slopes, their promise of a rich brew almost palpable, alongside mango trees ladened with fruit. The air grew perceptibly colder with every climb.
Video Review of Silver Oaks

My first essential stop was Middleton Coffee Cafe Bar. Perched precariously on a hillside, this wooden-framed establishment overlooked a sprawling coffee farm. The proprietor, Paul, greeted me with a genuine smile and a cup of coffee so potent, “I had to dilute it!” he chuckled as I described the intensity.

Reinvigorated, I continued to Newcastle, now a training ground for the Jamaica Defence Force. The barracks, with their historic architecture, adds to the interest of the location. I snapped photos of the non-functional cannon and the display of regimental badges along the perimeter wall, absorbing the history. From here, I called the proprietor of Silver Oaks Villa for final directions. “It was a stone’s throw away,” he assured me, adding, “you must look out for a big rock on the left.” And just as he said, I found it, following the winding driveway until I reached Silver Oaks Villa, a beautiful wooden-structured home nestled gracefully in the community of Greenwich.

A Glimpse of Old-World Charm: The Villa’s Design

Silver Oaks Villa instantly captivated me with its undeniable old-English charm. The entire property, particularly the home itself, is a masterclass in classic British design from the early 1900s. Everywhere you look, natural wood dominates—from the polished floors to the paneled walls and the elegant French doors that hint at breezy transitions to the outdoors. A welcoming fireplace stands ready for cooler evenings, solidifying that cozy, colonial feel. The grounds are adorned with a profusion of flowers, their diverse hues creating a natural spectacle.
A Seamless Blend of Past and Present

Around the back is a vibrant display of blooms, their colors bursting forth in a joyous array. A beautiful lavender-hued bench, placed under a large tree, invites quiet contemplation, accompanied by the constant, cheerful sound of birds.
Beyond the manicured gardens, the property transforms into a natural orchard, dotted with various fruit trees. One in particular, a guava tree, was filled with bright yellow fruits. Eagerly, I plucked one and took a generous bite. My face twisted instantly from the sharp tartness, my eyes squinting in surprise! My reaction drew laughter from the two attentive staff members. One of them kindly clarified, “You picked the sour one; the sweet one is right beside it.” He was absolutely right; the adjacent tree bore some of the most incredibly sweet guavas I’ve ever tasted. Among this natural bounty, I also discovered fragrant rosemary, towering pines, refreshing mint, escallion, and even peach trees thriving in the cool mountain air.

The verandah has an expansive wooden deck and is the very heart of the outdoor space, stretching outwards to present unparalleled views of the Kingston cityscape below, often softly veiled in mist. Thoughtfully arranged seating areas, complete with comfortable sofas and armchairs in shades of brilliant turquoise, summons you to unwind and converse.
Adding a touch of contemporary luxury while preserving its classic appeal, a sparkling jacuzzi is seamlessly incorporated into the wooden deck. Its tiled base, crafted from what appears to be natural stone, complements the surrounding wood and natural elements. This clever design allows guests to indulge in warm waters while still being enveloped by the stunning panoramic scenery.

The Guest Quarters
Each of the villa’s four rooms features the warmth of polished wooden floors and horizontal wood paneling on the walls, a direct homage to traditional building techniques of the era. The diverse color palettes work in unison to create a universally inviting atmosphere. One room, with its distinct terracotta-hued walls, houses a regal four-poster bed, elegantly adorned with a nature-inspired comforter in hues of coral and teal. A finely detailed wooden dressing table with an ornate mirror completes this classic tableau.

Another welcoming bedroom, painted in cheerful yellow, boasts a sturdy wooden bed frame covered by a delightful patchwork quilt, featuring soft pink, green, and cream floral patterns. Antique-style wooden bedside tables with traditional lamps enhance the room’s vintage charm. An adjoining ensuite, peeking through an open doorway, continues this warm palette with its pink walls.
A third yellow-painted room mirrors the warm wooden floors and paneling, featuring a similar floral patchwork quilt and classic dark wood furnishings, including a dressing table and accompanying bedside tables.
The fourth room offers a brighter feel with its white horizontal wood paneling. A comfortable bed is draped in a richly patterned patchwork quilt showcasing deeper greens, purples, and blues, complemented by white bedside tables and lamps. Across all rooms, the furniture choices, from dressers to bed frames, consistently exhibit solid, traditional craftsmanship reminiscent of the early 20th century, ensuring a cohesive and authentic design throughout.

The bathrooms at Silver Oaks Villa are thoughtfully designed, merging essential practicalities with aesthetic appeal. Each is distinctively appointed with excellent accenting colors, ensuring both comfort and visual pleasure.
One bathroom commands attention with its striking pink walls and crisp white wainscoting, lending a classic touch. It features a pristine white pedestal sink, toilet, and even a bidet, alongside a heated towel rack—a particularly welcome amenity given the cooler mountain temperatures. The large mirror above the sink amplifies the bold palette.
Another bathroom employs a soothing light lavender hue on its upper walls, beautifully offset by light-colored wooden wainscoting. This space includes a sleek, modern walk-in shower enclosed in glass panels, offering a spacious, contemporary feel. A white pedestal sink and toilet complete the clean, elegant look.
