Lost in Tepoztlán: A Jamaican’s Journey through Mexico

Written by Kareem LaTouche

Visiting Tepoztlán, a traditional Mexican town south of Mexico City, was easily the highlight of my trip. This wasn’t just another tourist stop; it was a sensory immersion that transported me back in time and straight into the heart of Mexican culture.

A Journey Through Cobbled Streets

The journey from the bustling Mexico City was long, but the moment I stepped foot in Tepoztlán, I knew it was worth it. The narrow streets, a patchwork of cobblestone and cement, hummed with a timeless energy. It instantly reminded me of Port Maria, Port Royal, or Port Antonio squares back in Jamaica – places where Spanish influence is woven into the very fabric of the city.

A Taste of Home, a World Away

My first stop was Posada La Ventana del Tepozteco, a charming old hotel that seemed to capture the town’s artistic soul. Vines snaked across the walls, leading me to a prominent gate that marked the entrance.

Inside, I ordered an “agua de Jamaica,” a drink I was curious about. To my surprise, it was none other than our beloved Jamaican Sorrel! Here, it was a refreshing summer beverage, a stark contrast to its Christmastime association back home. The hotel’s layout was fascinating, with shaded dining areas and lush gardens cascading down each level, a haven of tranquility amidst the vibrant town.

Ice Cream Adventures and Family Fun

Following the slope downhill, I stumbled upon Tepoznieves Matriz, a local ice cream haven. The air buzzed with laughter as families enjoyed their colorful treats. Torn between adventurous flavors and familiarity, I opted for “Oasis” – a delightful mix of strawberry, pineapple, guava (guayaba), and peach (durazno), all nestled inside a generously portioned waffle cone.

A Slice of Authentic Life

Tepoztlán is a town that’s filled with life. Short-wheelbase buses, known as “peseros,” jostled for space, filled with locals heading home. Students strolled by, their jokes echoing in the streets. Vendors showcasing their wares with infectious enthusiasm, adding to the vibrant layout of sights and sounds. It was a scene straight out of a movie, bursting with authenticity.

A Communal Heartbeat

Continuing my exploration, I reached the town’s central square, a haven of shaded seating areas and a stage at its center. The spirit of community was undeniable. Large, colorful letters spelling “Tepoztlán,” each adorned with an animal, served as a playful backdrop for the children who converged there. Their laughter filled the air as a young boy showcased his basketball skills to his friend, reminding me of my childhood when I would visit Morant Bay square,  back in St. Thomas.

A Market Feast for the Senses

The vibrant market at the square’s back announced itself with the mouthwatering aroma of delicious food. People strolled by, their hands overflowing with local delicacies. The sheer buzz of activity was exhilarating, a sign of the town’s strong sense of community. Here, amidst the sights and smells, I truly experienced the essence of Mexican culture.

Experience Tepoztlán for Yourself

Tepoztlán is a beautiful location waiting to be discovered. If you’re looking for a taste of authentic Mexico, a place where history and culture intertwine with vibrant life, then Tepoztlán is a must-visit.
