When The Gleaner encountered Felix George on a sunny day in the Canoe Valley of south St. Elizabeth and Manchester, it was as if he had materialized out of thin air, much like the local hens, roosters, and even a curious little cat that had welcomed us when we arrived. This chance meeting with George, a free-spirited German traveler, unveiled a captivating tale of exploration and adventure.
An Unconventional Journey Begins
George’s journey in Jamaica had commenced on December 14 when he landed in Montego Bay, St. James. However, he made a conscious decision not to rely on buses or conventional transportation during his stay on the island. He wanted to experience Jamaica at a more leisurely pace, allowing him to immerse himself in its rich culture and breathtaking landscapes.

For three days, George walked to Negril, where he decided to purchase a bicycle. After spending a few days there, he headed eastward, eventually finding himself in Alligator Pond. His exploration along the coast road eventually led him to the picturesque Canoe Valley. His ultimate goal was to traverse the east and north coasts of Jamaica before returning to Montego Bay, where he planned to depart on January 18.
Meeting a German Free Spirit in Jamaica
As we engaged George in conversation, he shared his perspective on his journey thus far, describing it as “good.” He appreciated the warm, sunny days of Jamaica but admitted that the nights could get a bit chilly. George’s nights were spent sleeping on the inviting beaches, providing him with a unique experience of the island’s natural beauty. He expressed his eagerness to continue exploring the rest of the country.
A delightful surprise awaited George during our conversation when a Jamaican passerby greeted him in German. His face lit up with astonishment, leading to an animated exchange. It turned out that the Jamaican had lived in Frankfurt, the very city George calls home. This unexpected connection underscored the serendipity of George’s journey and the way travel can bring people from different corners of the world together.
Life on the Road: George’s Experience
As we spoke, George prepared a simple yet satisfying meal of crackers, sardines, and tuna, generously spiced with Jamaican pepper sauce. His weariness from the road was evident, but his spirits remained high. He found solace under a shed by the main road, sharing a meal with the little cat that had curiously joined him, much like the way George himself had joined the Jamaican landscape.
George’s journey encapsulated the essence of a traveller seeking more than just sightseeing. His decision to explore Jamaica on two wheels allowed him to interact with locals, enjoy the diverse cuisine, and savour the beauty of the island in a way that only a slow-paced adventure could offer.
A Cultural Connection in Canoe Valley
Leaving George and his newfound feline companion at their idyllic spot by the road, we departed with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the serendipity of travel. George’s journey through Jamaica exemplifies the spirit of exploration, emphasising the value of taking the road less travelled.
In the end, Felix George’s unconventional adventure serves as a reminder that the beauty of travel lies not just in the destinations we reach but in the people we meet and the unexpected connections we forge along the way. His story is a testament to the enriching experiences that await those who choose to explore the world with an open heart and a spirit of adventure.
