Jamaica Swamp Safari from crocodiles to 007

Our quest is always to find the real Jamaica, the places with stories that stay with you long after you’ve left. This time, we took a trip down to the Jamaica Swamp Safari, and we discovered an experience with layers of adventure and history.

Quick Facts

Who is it for: It’s a great spot for nature lovers, fans of the James Bond films, and families looking to see a different side of the island.

What it is NOT: It is not a modern, highly-commercialized theme park. It’s a natural reserve focused on conservation and genuine wildlife encounters.

Tip: Listen closely to your guide, especially Mr. Roach, as he/she offers invaluable insights and tips on how to respect and coexist with the animals.

What stands out: The sheer number of crocodiles, and the historical link to the iconic film, Live and Let Die

What to carry: Water, comfortable walking shoes, bug spray, and a camera to capture the moments.

From the moment you arrive, you understand this place is unique. It’s said to be the largest community of crocodiles in Jamaica, and seeing them in their natural mangrove home is something else entirely. For about an hour, you walk through the natural setting, and the air is filled with the sounds of the swamp—the rustling leaves, the calls of unseen birds.

This very location holds a piece of cinematic history. Remember the iconic croc-jumping scene from the James Bond film “Live and Let Die”? It was filmed right here in 1972. It gives the place a certain intrigue, knowing that the film’s crew and actors once walked this same ground. We even learned that the name of the Bond villain, Kananga, was inspired by the original owner of the swamp. It’s a fascinating link between our local history and a global phenomenon.

For me, the real spirit of the Safari is found in its people. We were fortunate to meet Mr. Roach, who has been working there since 1969. Imagine that—he has seen generations of crocodiles grow up. The connection he has with these animals is profound. He speaks to them, and they seem to listen. He gave us essential tips on how to respect crocodiles and how to avoid harming them.

Our guided tour also introduced us to Shakira, a 20-foot Green Anaconda. Seeing a snake that large up close is a thrill. And the crocodile pole feeding is a raw display of nature’s power, watching those powerful creatures leap from the water to get their meal.

The safari also features Jamaica’s largest walk-through aviary, a wonderful place to be surrounded by many of our rare, endemic birds. Their colors and songs fill the air, reminding you of the incredible biodiversity we have here in Jamaica. And if you’re observant, you might even spot a Jamaican Coney, a small mammal once believed to be extinct.

For the bold among us, there’s even a chance to hold a baby crocodile or a Jamaican Boa. We’ll admit, we were a little nervous, but it’s an opportunity to connect with these animals in a way you never thought possible.

We’ll be honest, when we visited, the place wasn’t in perfect condition. You could see that time and resources have taken a toll. But the owner is optimistic and determined, believing that little by little, the Safari will return to its full glory. And we believe him. The heart and soul are there, the connection to nature is strong, and the stories this place holds are invaluable.
