Joe James was a prolific Jamaican artist, whose work has been shown throughout the world. Having spent some time in Europe, he decided to return to Jamaica in the 60’s and establish a gallery for himself. With Kingston being developed, in contrast to many rural parishes, at the time, he decided to set up shop in Rio Bueno, right next to the sea. His son Micheal, told KareemsQuest.com that his father initially went to St. Ann, close to Nine Mile, where Bob Marley is from, however he wanted to be next to the ocean.

In those days people would come and look at his artwork and talk for hours, which sparked a light bulb in his mind. He and his wife decided to start a restaurant, calling it Lobster Bowl, with seafood being one of the main staples on the menu. His story instantly reminded KareemsQuest.com of Jamnesia and Yaga Farm, as both owners decided to move back to their places of origin and set up their business.

After providing guests with food, they then looked for a place to rest and this started James’ next initiative, The Rio Bueno Hotel. It’s a small boutique property, where each room has a scenic view of the ocean.

Sadly, KareemsQuest.com was informed that James passed away in 2018, however his children have taken over his business to ensure that his legacy lives on. Now when persons visit the property, they can dine at the restaurant, view the art gallery or book a room at the hotel. You can find the location of Lobster Bowl at the bottom of the page.
